“I did not even know how to pronounce the word ‘PRONOUNCE’. Some words like ‘apple’ I used to say ‘yapple’, now I know it is ‘apple’ and words beginning with ‘r’ like ‘rabbit’ were difficult for me but now I can say them properly. Our teacher Sheri took more personal interest and enabled me to pronounce properly. She has a lot of patience to deal with people like me, age 53. Moreover she has the ‘skill and ability’ to relate to the level of the student and bring them up to the right level. Now I know how to pronounce English correctly.”
Many people know and understand the English language but still have difficulty with oral communication due to a strong accent. Accent Reduction, an advanced level English language class based on linguistic theory and practice, addresses the specific skills involved in speaking clearly. Areas of instruction include vowel and consonant sounds, patterns of stress, intonation and rhythm.
Each course is composed of four main activities. First, the initial assessment identifies skills that have already been mastered and which need further developing. Individualized instruction is then provided at scheduled intervals allowing for adequate practice between sessions and ensuring long-term results. The final aspect of the course is regular evaluations to monitor the student’s progress and further focus on skills not yet mastered.
Fluency Connection offers two types of onsite Accent Reduction programs; a ten-week program and a six-month program. The shorter course addresses those basic skills needed for clear communication. Sessions are held once a week for an hour or more, dependent on the size of the group. Our six-month program begins with the basic ten-week program, but incorporates one follow-up session per month for four subsequent months. This increases a participant’s ability to retain the new skills acquired during Accent Reduction Coaching.
Fluency Connection prides itself on customizing courses to the needs of each work place as well as each unique student or group. Fees are tailored based on the group size, number of sessions, length of course and travel distance. Scheduling and fees are determined following a complimentary onsite consultation. All supplies – student books and materials – are included in the course fee.
